Dr. Cosmas Zyaambo

Dr. Cosmas Zyambo Sianantu is a Medical Doctor, distinguished public health expert, scholar, senior lecturer, and dedicated community leader from Sinazongwe District. Known for his humility, compassion, and servant leadership, he has devoted much of his life to uplifting communities through education, health, youth empowerment, and cultural preservation.
Born and raised in Mweezya Village, Sinazongwe District, Dr. Zyaambo began his education at Makonkoto Primary School before later moving to Sinazeze Primary School. He then proceeded to Chipepo Secondary School, where he excelled academically and became Head Boy academics. Years later, he returned to serve as the founder and inaugural chairperson of the Chipepo Secondary School Alumni, an initiative that continues to champion education and opportunity for the youth.
His academic journey led him to the University of Zambia, Ridgeway Campus, where he studied Medicine and later worked as an intern at Kitwe Central Hospital. With an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, he pursued an MPhil (Master of Philosophy) in International Health (Public Health) in Norway, Europe. He later advanced to the United States, earning a PhD in Public Health in Birmingham, Alabama—a city just two hours from Atlanta, Georgia. Upon completion, his outstanding academic record earned him the prestigious Fogarty Scholarship, which enabled him to undertake postdoctoral research at Yale University’s School of Public Health, one of the world’s leading Ivy League institutions.
Professionally, Dr. Zyaambo has held several leadership roles, including serving as the Head of Department for Community and Family Medicine at the University of Zambia, School of Public Health. His current research focuses on pressing global and local health challenges, including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, substance abuse, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and HIV among both the general population and adolescents.
Beyond the hospital and lecture halls, Dr. Zyaambo is deeply rooted in community service. He has spearheaded initiatives supporting schools, churches, and communities with building materials and scholarships, promoted grassroots sports, improved access to clean water, and invested in cultural activities and indigenous knowledge systems. His passion for development stretches back not only to Sinazongwe but also to Gwembe, where he has championed unity and progress through education and culture.
As a man of faith and vision, Dr. Zyaambo firmly believes that “true leadership is not about titles, but about service to people.” He embodies this principle by consistently giving back to the community, ensuring that development reaches even the most rural and underserved areas.
Respected both nationally and internationally, Dr. Zyaambo has represented Zambia in global health and development forums, advocating for stronger health systems, equity in healthcare, and the well-being of communities.
Today, Dr. Cosmas Zyaambo is celebrated not only for his professional excellence but also for his heart for people, humility, and unwavering commitment to the welfare of Sinazongwe, Zambia, and the world at large.
