Powering the Future:
Why the President’s 2MW Solar Programme Matters for Every Constituency
President Hakainde Hichilema has given a clear direction for the country, and one key message is the need for stable power. The recent droughts reduced our hydropower supply, and this is what caused the load-shedding we are facing, not politics, but climate pressure on an already weak system.
The President’s directive for each constituency to produce 2 megawatts of solar power is a practical and forward-looking solution. Just 2MW can power up to 1,000 homes, support schools, clinics, water systems, farms and small industries. It reduces pressure on Kariba and Kafue hydro power stations, helps prevent future load-shedding, creates jobs, and even allows constituencies to sell extra power and raise income.
This is more than electricity, it’s local economic growth, climate resilience and national security. Every Zambian stands to benefit.
As a nation, we must prepare ourselves, save where possible, build skills, support farming and enterprise, and invest in things that bring long-term value. This is how families grow stronger and how Zambia builds wealth that lasts.
With unity, discipline, peace and smart investment in solar energy, Zambia will rise stronger
